Three years ago, with nearly 25 years of experience in the power generation industry — partnering primarily with major OEMs — I embarked on a new journey. I became a power industry consultant to serve power plant owners in improving their plant reliability and operational efficiency, as well as developing a cost-effective O&M strategy.
My initial client engagements were fairly diverse — from improving operational and commercial efficiencies of combined cycle power plants to renegotiating multi-year service agreements and conducting due diligence of power-generating assets that were up for sale. All the while, I have been leading the upgrade of several GT control systems.
But my goal has always been to hone in on the right niche within the power industry; specifically, applying my expertise and experience to help solve pressing issues to make thermal power plants generate reliable energy today and tomorrow. After many enlightening conversations with industry experts and a deep dive into the current state of the evolving power industry, I’ve made a strategic decision to focus ST Power Services on transforming thermal power plants to become the bridge to our clean energy future.
The decision to refocus my power service organization was confirmed at Electric Power Conference in Las Vegas, where I had the opportunity to speak with a number of attendees, including those participating in the Plant Management Institute. I learned a valuable lesson that those responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of thermal plants are struggling to meet today’s growing demand for reliable energy while preparing for a clean energy future. This is evident both in their management of an aging technology’s O&M risk and in the workforce they lead.
These aren’t challenges that can fall by the wayside as we pursue a future fueled by variable power sources; rather, solving these problems is the essential first step in power plant transformation.
